Six laboratories, a fabrication shop and a two-storey commons added to a 1928 campus building without pretending to be from 1928.
The problem
Matching a Collegiate Gothic campus while housing a programme with duct and service requirements the original building never imagined.
What we did
A quiet masonry base carries the original datum lines; above it, a glazed and metal-panel volume reads clearly as new. Services run in an exposed spine the students can see working.
Outcome
Occupied for the following academic year. The exposed service spine is now used as teaching material in the engineering curriculum.
